My intention is to create art that will make the viewer feel uncomfortable while expressing the concept of pain through the use of anatomy and figure. My work shows graphic images to display the physical and psychological interpretations pertaining to the source of pain. My art is distorted and uses different parts of the body with the focus on limbs, organs and facial expression in gory and shocking ways. A quote that has inspired my thinking for my fourth year projects is, “I like to make people a little uncomfortable. It encourages them to examine who they are and why they think the way they do.”—Sally Mann.
By using various forms of printmaking such as lithography and woodcut, it helps me to depict the anatomy in different variations. I had research Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawing of the human figure and anatomy to better educate myself of the visual aspects of the human form. I had also researched portraits by Rembrandt to help me grasp an understanding as to how to achieve certain facial expressions. With portraying sinister and dark images in my work, it allows me to express the concepts of pain while making the viewer feel uncomfortable.
